Aaron has everything he’s ever wanted. His work as a highly paid author and speaker is very rewarding, and he’s perfectly satisfied with the short-term sexual liaisons he’s become used to. But now his publisher wants Aaron to write about successful relationships in his next book. How can he do that when he’s never had one? Everything begins to change when Jane Barloc enters his life. Have they met before? The immediate connection he feels is stronger than anything he’s ever before experienced.

When Jane Barloc’s counseling client Connor needs a ride to his parents’ house, she’s happy to help him out. But, then Connor drags her into the house, and Jane is shocked to see the man who’s been haunting her dreams for years. She had no idea Connor Adler was related to the famous author.

Interview:

Where are you from? Tell us a little about yourself!

Although I was born in Louisiana, my family moved to Michigan when I was only three-years-old. Annual visits to my cousins in the Shreveport helped keep my Southern roots alive and intact. Since I am the author of romance novels, it helps that I’ve always been a romantic. Cinderella and Prince Charming have lived with me since I was a child, and I see them almost every day. My own life has been the stuff of fairy tales, and I’ve played the role of both the damsel in distress and the fair maiden who wins the heart of the prince. After coming through the distress of an abusive marriage, I am now married to my loving and handsome husband. I’ve had more than enough and have also been a single Mom who lost her home and struggled to keep food on the table for her children. I am who I am today because of all of those experiences, and I’m grateful for everything and everyone who has touched my life.

Tell us about your book? How did it get started?

After a lifetime of reading romance novels, I began writing in 2015. My husband comes from a very large and loving family (9 children), and was the inspiration for the Adler family. In addition, I am a fan of Bella Andre, Jill Shalvis and similar authors – great romance with plenty of ho, scenes. Consequently, the Adler series are steamy romance novels about a big family. Each book focuses on one of the siblings, and tells the story of how he or she finds the love of their life. Currently there are six completed of the planned 8-10 books in the series.

How do you create your characters?

Experiences with my husband’s siblings and parents have definitely factored into my writing. The children in both my husband’s and the Adler family are affected by the child’s position in the family (oldest, youngest, etc.), and that certainly influences who that child becomes as an adult. Also, it’s no coincidence that there are twins in the Adler family, as my hubby has twins in his family too (although only one set of twins versus two sets for the Adlers). Also, a lot of my own personal experiences seem to find their way into the stories.

What inspires and what got you started in writing?

That’s an easy question. Inspiration is everywhere! People are my inspiration … their struggles and triumphs … challenges and victories … relationships—both good and not so wonderful. As an author, I might see something on the TV or internet, hear something on the radio, or read/listen to something in the news and think, “That would be great to include in a story!” I have slips of paper everywhere and notes in my smart phone filled with ideas.

My sister, Nancy C. Johnson, wrote the NYT best-seller, Her Last Letter. Nancy both encouraged and helped me to get started on my writing career. You will see my dedication to her in the first three novels in the series. The Adler series would not exist without the love and support of my wonderful sister.

Where do you write? Is there something you need in order to write (music, drinks?)

At this time in my career, I have a designated writing area in my home – just a small desk with my computer, printer, and lots of books and notes. Music has always been a big part of my life. I love to sing (although not very well) and know the lyrics to songs from the eras of my grandmother, mother, and my own. As much as music inspires me, the only sounds I prefer when writing are the sounds of nature. I tend to be easily distracted and quiet helps me to focus.

How do you get your ideas for writing?

Ideas for my books, plots and characters are found in much of my own life. I’ve always been a romantic. Even as a child, I loved the stories of fair maidens and knights in shining armor, or damsels in distress who were saved by the handsome prince. At times in my life I feel like I’ve been both the damsel and the fair maiden. I’ve successfully come through the distress of an abusive marriage, and now am married to my loving and handsome prince. I’ve lived in very comfortable surroundings with more than enough. I’ve also been a single Mom who lost her home and struggled to keep food on the table for herself and her children.

What do you like to read?

As I mentioned earlier, I am a romantic at heart. Romance remains my favorite genre. It’s also fun when a little mystery is mixed in with the tale. Thrillers are not for me and I stay away from horror completely. I enjoy reading other author’s stories of love and romance. I believe you find what you look for in life … what you focus on tends to become your reality. Romance surrounds us, and it is a pleasure to read and write about such a wonderful topic.

What would your advice to be for authors or aspiring authors in regards to writing?

Have fun! When you enjoy what you do, I think it shows in your work. I write almost every day—not because I have to, but because I want to. It also helps to remember the old parable about the tortoise and the hare. Writing is a marathon, not a sprint. It takes time to write a novel, and it takes time for readers to find you and like your work. Have faith. Be patient and be consistently persistent.

Anything else you’d like to share?

This was an interesting year for me. The Adler series is definitely a labor of love, but hasn’t yet attracted the audience hoped for. Consequently, I started writing a couple of books that will not feature the Adler family. It took me several weeks before I realized that finishing the series is a commitment made not only to myself but the readers that have enjoyed my work.

I must listen to my own advice to other authors and continue to have fun, do what I love (write), have patience and be consistently persistent.
