High-school junior, Halen Stone is starting a new school in sunny California. When her twin brother, Floyd, brings home his new friend Austin, Halen only has one word: wow!

School, running, babysitting and barbeques bring them together, but one thing keeps them apart, Austin’s gorgeous girlfriend.

A timely break-up and the school’s Halloween dance finally give Halen and Austin a chance to be together…as more than friends

Excerpt:

“Halen,” a voice called from within the group. Definitely not Floyd’s. She took a deep breath and turned as Austin emerged from the crowd. A leggy blonde in a short skirt and high heels watched them with narrowed eyes.

“Hey,” he said. “I spoke to the coach this morning. He said it was too late to join the team. Something about paperwork and all that. Sorry, I should’ve asked him before I mentioned it.”

“No problem.” It’s not like she wanted to join in the first place. She’d hardly thought about it on her run this morning. Well, perhaps a little. Cross country, of course, not Austin.

“Maybe you and I could run together some time,” he said. “We’re supposed to practice on our own twice a week, but to be honest, I don’t have much willpower when I’m expected to do it myself.”

He wanted to run with her? Really? “Sure. Anytime. You know where I live,” she said with a chuckle. Ha-ha. That was funny, right?

Austin laughed, and from behind him a pair of eyes, heavy with blue eye shadow and dark eyeliner, aimed invisible beams of dislike at Halen’s chest.

Interview:

Where are you from? Tell us a little about yourself!

I live a pretty quiet life in Stouffville, Ontario….that’s just outside Toronto (in Canada)…where my husband and I are empty nesters and I’ve worked for the same company 28 years.  It sounds boring, but I love my life.

I’ve got one daughter & two step-daughters…18, 19 & 21…and I really miss getting all their leftover YA books. Now I have to buy them for myself. Or write them.

What inspires and what got you started in writing?

CALIFORNIA BLUE is my 5th book / my 2nd Young Adult. All of my books are short stories or novellas, which I think is in part due to the fact that I have a short attention span, but also because I like to do some many other things. Right now I’ve got 2 knitting projects, a needlepoint and a cross-stitch project on the go. I have 4 WIPs (books in progress…writing), and I have 2 BIPs (books in progress…reading).

I got started in writing because I use to daydream a lot driving to work (I still daydream, but I work from home now)…and I finally decided to start writing these stories down. Pretty much anything and everything inspires me.

How do you get your ideas for writing?

I think a lot of my ideas come from “what if…?” Watching television or a movie, or even reading a book.  WHAT IF this happened instead of this? And then off I go.

I get many of my name ideas from my daughters. They’ll be talking about a friend or someone on social media, and I’ll be like “ooooh, I like that” and I’ll pull out my little red book. The heroine in CALIFORNIA BLUE is named Halen, and I first heard that as a name from one of my daughter’s old teachers.

What do you like to read?

Like my crafts, my reading tastes vary. Right now, I’m reading a young adult Sci-Fi book by NW Harris, and the newest fantasy book by Charlaine Harris. When I’m done those, I’ll be starting the 3rd book in Diana Gabaldon’s OUTLANDER series. (The Outlander books are so long and time consuming – short attention span, remember – so I always make sure I get 2 or 3 books read in between.)

Although all three of these books are series, I’m actually trying to break away from some of the series writers to explore new authors, and I actually just downloaded THIS IS WHERE IT ENDS, a contemporary YA by Marieke Nijkamp and THE SECRET TO LETTING GO by Katherine Fleet.
