Her Laird, Her Lover By Sable Grey: A Review

Must Read

Denise Alicea

This blog was created by Denise in September 2008 to blog about writing, book reviews, and technology. Slowly, but surely this blog expanded to what it has become now, a central for book reviews of all kinds interviews, contests, and of course promotional venue for authors, etc

O.k, here we go, let me just say that I came into this blindly, not having read any of Sable Grey’s work previously, so I had no expectations of her style and this is my first romance review, this book features sex, as if you didn’t know, it’s all m/f stuff, no extras, with a more romantic edge to it, to be clear, while this might be boarderline erotica, it is NOT porn, and now, onto the review.

The characters, while initially seeming shallow grew quite well to have depths to them, even if the female lead still posed more question then she answered, but much of that was countered by the dynamic that the author created between the two lead characters, while not wishing to give away too much of the details of the book, the author creates a couple in love, while they may not have to come t it from a more traditional standpoint. Of the two, the male lead, the Laird, is I would say the more developed of the two, showing a defining past, filled with ups and downs as any persons is, while the female lead may get more of the book devoted to her, I found myself caring less about her then the male lead.

The Hot

The sex scenes were really good, scorching, I would say. While there was, as there always is, potential for these things to become repetitive, the author did a really good job of changing it up often enough that it didn’t become the same old thrust and grunt that we’ve seen countless times before.

The Not

Whilst this is only a short book, more of a novelette, I definitely got a sense of the characters, they are all reasonably well rounded by the time you reach the end, with their flaws as well as their good points. The fight scenes in the book, such as they were, were well written and well paced, I would definitely see this an one of the authors strong points and think she should work to expand on it.

The Odd

Our female lead is an odd duck, a former photographer, turned psychic conwoman, with a deep understanding of tactical warfare in a foreign time, to me this just seemed to sit oddly, given her previous statements about being so wrapped up in her career as a photographer, later on she also display a marshal prowess that was previously unremarked upon, without giving away the scene, while it’s well executed, it does seem highly unlikely that a woman with no mention of prior training could best a trained and battle hardened soldier, it does flow reasonably well.

In conclusion, I found this book to be rather enjoyable, it seemed to have a shaky start, perhaps trying to establish too much too soon, but in the latter half the pace picked up and the romped along quite well. I still have problems with the female characters back story, but overlooking that, I would call it a nice read for a lazy afternoon, I’d give this book a slightly above average review , it would have rated higher had the female leads background not raised so many unanswered questions.

7/10

Hi there. Thank you for the review of Her Laird, Her Lover. I’m currently working on the second installment of this series and hopefully it will be as well received.

I appreciate all of you comments and feedback and thank you for the time and consideration you gave to my book.
