Blurb:

Nina Barnes thinks Valentine’s Day should be optional. That way single people like her wouldn’t be subjected to kissy Cupids all over the place. That is, until her mom moves them next door to the brooding hottie of Greenbrier High, West Smith. He’s funny, looks amazing in a black leather jacket, and he’s fluent in Harry Potter, but she’s not sure he’s boyfriend material.

West isn’t sure what to make of Nina. She’s cute and loves to read as much as he does, but she seems to need to debate everything and she has a pathological insistence on telling the truth. And West doesn’t exactly know how to handle that, since his entire life is a carefully constructed secret. Dating the girl next door could be a ton of fun, but only if Nina never finds out the truth about his home life. It’s one secret that could bring them together or rip them apart.

Where are you from? Tell us a little about yourself!

I’m from Southern Illinois. I’m a speech therapist by day and an author by night.

Tell us about your book? How did it get started?

I like using the “what if” method. What if there was a guy who constantly lied about his home life to cover up a family secret? What if there was a girl who insisted on always telling the truth due to her family’s issues? What would happen if those characters fell in love?

How do you create your characters?

I start by putting characters into strange situations and then I figure out how they would react based on their quirky personalities. I also like to give the characters relatable hobbies and interests. In The Dating Debate, Nina has a yellow lab named Gidget, who is based on my ever-shedding yellow lab Molly. Nina also has a love for all things Harry Potter, which is something she has in common with West.

What inspires and what got you started in writing?

I’ve always been an avid reader. Trying to write a book seemed like the next logical step. I’m a huge fan of snarky banter. The Buffy the Vampire Slayer television series inspired my love of fun, snarky characters.

Where do you write? Is there something you need in order to write (music, drinks?)

Coffee. Every night after work I come home and drink several cups of coffee to jump start my brain and get into writing mode.

How do you get your ideas for writing?

Eavesdropping and people watching can provide a surprising amount of inspiration.

What do you like to read?

I love reading urban fantasy and romantic comedies.

What would your advice to be for authors or aspiring in regards to writing?

Read. Join an online or local writing group like SCBWI or RWA. Write a little bit every day.
