Bowing low, Christopher held out his hand. “Miss Wilding-Marsh, may I have the pleasure of this dance?”
Etta’s gaze whipped to his. “I beg your pardon?”
Smiling as charmingly as he could, he said, “May I have the pleasure of this dance?”
A different type of frown settled on her brow. He would deem this one “confusion.” “Why?”
“Because I wish to dance with you, and hope you wish the same.”
Still frowning, she said, “I should say yes, just so I can step all over your feet.”
He began to feel a bit like an idiot, holding out his hand, but he persevered. “I am reputed to be an excellent dancer.”
Of course Etta would baldly state she wasn’t a good dancer. “Why is that?”
“It is difficult to refine one’s skill when one is not asked.” She said it matter-of-factly and showed no sign her lack of partners affected her in any way. Why was it, then, that he thought perhaps it had?
“I will take the chance my feet will be trampled. Please.” Hoping for a persuasive tone, he lowered his voice. “Dance with me.”
Her eyes widened. The ball around them faded, until all he could see were uncertain brown eyes, ready to retreat at the first hint of insincerity.
Finally, cautiously, she took his hand. Slender fingers curled about his, clothed in plain white cotton. Her palm was narrow, delicate, and dwarfed by his. For a fleeting moment, he wished his gloves and hers gone, wished he could feel the slide of her skin against his.
Shaking his head, he dismissed the thought as he led her to the dance floor, taking position opposite her in the row of dancers. The first steps of the dance brought them close, her head barely brushing his chin, her shoulders narrow. So odd to think of Etta as delicate. She possessed such fire, held such passionate opinions, that one almost forgot she was really a tiny dab of a person.
They danced for a time in silence, long enough for him to notice the slight fragrance of honeysuckle and violets. Her hair. Her hair smelt of honeysuckle and violets.
