About the workshop: YA fiction is currently becoming edgier, with teens who are experiencing any number of psychological issues. This course will use information from the DSM-IV-TR, case studies, as well as pop culture examples (televisions, music, movies) to illustrate the signs and symptoms of psychological disorders common to adolescents: depression, anxiety, bulimia, oppositional defiant disorder, conduct disorder, and anorexia.

About the Instructor: Cynthia Richards has served as a crisis counselor for a domestic violence intervention program for children who witness violence and an on-call administrator and crisis manager for a population of residential university students. She holds a B.A. in Sociology from the University of Akron and a M.Ed in Community Counseling from Kent State University. Cynthia is currently a psychology instructor at a community college and is pursuing her doctoral degree in cultural foundations of education.
