About the course: The New Adult category has become the hot new
category in fiction. But what is New Adult exactly? New Adult straddles
the line between childhood and adulthood, when protagonists are faced
with intense life changes moving away from home, starting university,
first loves, experimenting with sex, joining the military, and so much
more. New Adult isn’t just `sexed up’ Young Adult. Rather, the category
represents a transitional period in a character’s life. This workshop
will provide a comprehensive study of the elements that make a book `New
Adult.’ These elements include voice, character age, the conflicts
faced, and the ability to address mature and taboo themes. The workshop
will compare and contrast New Adult with Young Adult, highlighting the
similarities and differences between the two categories. The workshop
will identify the New Adult audience, examining New Adult’s crossover
appeal. The workshop will also address where New Adult fits from a
marketing perspective, discussing trends in bookshelf stocking and the
importance of eBooks in reaching the New Adult audience. Lastly, the
workshop will discuss the category’s indie roots and will focus on the
impact of book bloggers in driving the New Adult market.
